I have used stripes of lemon, peach, mint green, baby blue, soft lilac and baby pink, with white in between. which has been worked from corner to corner, making the stripes diagonal. I have used 100% acrylic yarn in dk, which washes really well on a 40deg wool cycle or warm hand wash.
